I've been thinking about why I love painting sea turtles and their environment. I believe it goes back to my time snorkeling in Hawaii—watching these creatures that seem so clumsy on land move with such calm grace in the water. It was beautiful to witness.
It reminded me how much our environment matters to who we are meant to be. When an animal, person, or even a plant is taken out of its right environment, it can’t flourish as it should. That’s why I love painting these turtles in their natural world—at peace, gliding with the ocean’s current, and thriving as they were created to.
As I painted, I also found myself thinking about my husband and me. We share much in common, yet we’re very different people—and both value freedom deeply. I see the turtle near the top of the painting as representing him. He loves the light, discovery, and the next adventure. The turtle in the foreground feels more like me—still drawn to the light, but more introspective, often pondering life, faith, and meaning.
In the end, this piece became about more than the beauty of God’s creation—it’s also about relationship. Even when we swim in different directions at times, there’s always that bond that brings us back together.
